Philadelphia, PA | The Barnes Museum and Art Education Center opened in May 2012 to universal praise from the design community. Duratherm was consulted early in the process since we were the only supplier capable of designing the highly specialized forced entry units in the Galleries (units as large as 8'-0" wide by 17'-0" high) and the enormous entry window walls (21'-0" x 33'-0"). FSC™ certified White Oak throughout helped to recreate the look of the old Barnes Museum while contributing to the projects LEED certification.

Princeton, NJ | This project involved the renovation of and addition to a beautiful stone colonial. The architect sensitively balanced the historic detailing of the original structure with the decidedly contemporary addition. A large four-panel Lift/Roll door opens to an expansive view of the garden and pool. Additional Lift/Roll doors, coupled with butt-glazed corner units, provides a beautiful setting for the eat-in kitchen.

Bennington, VT | A liberal think tank set in the beautiful setting of the Green Mountains, The Center for Advancement of Public Action is a calm meditative presence on the campus. Duratherm contributes to this serene atmosphere with clear finished mahogany interior ribbon windows wrapping classrooms, public areas, and the central meditative courtyard. A rich dark stain on the exteriors contrasts with the white marble cladding of the structures.

Princeton, NJ | The project posed unique challenges in that it is an unheated, non-air-conditioned space used only in mild weather. For this reason, the windows called for solid teak, a durable, low maintenance material. The demanding acoustical requirements of the venue also required a complex window design. The building received an AIA Honor Award in 1995.

Prince Edward Island | Located on the windswept coast of Prince Edward Island, this private compound showcases Foster Associates remarkable level of detail and design in this rustic setting. Duratherm Lift/Slide windows and doors coupled with casement, awning and fixed windows in Sapele mahogany are used throughout. Custom extended exterior frames punctuate the masonry facades creating a deep setback for the windows whereas units in wood framed locations were set flush to the exterior. Combining Duratherm's mahogany products with architect-designed interiors and furnishings, this exquisitely detailed project displays an incredible level of sophistication yet livability.

East Hampton, NY | This pool house utilized a unique adaptation of Duratherm\\\'s Slide/Fold door system in solid Teak to create a screened pavillion that offers light and ventilation but shields the occupants. The louver blades were each set at separate, decreasing angles, a steep 45 degree pitch at the sill and gradual decreasing in pitch until they become horizontal at the top of the door panel. The result, while providing the desired privacy, also made for a sculptural look to the pavilion, particularly when seen at night.

Tiburon, CA | With panoramic views of the Bay area, this residence takes advantage of Duratherm's ability to provide large fixed units coupled with smaller operables in expansive window wall arrangements. Exterior horizontal mullion detailing incorporated strip lighting for a dramatic wash effect over the exterior window surface. Exterior vertical and horizontal shading fins, also provided by Duratherm, helped control light and privacy.

Port Chester, NY | This modernist residence set on a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound features monumental floor-to-ceiling window walls composed of alternating Lift/Roll doors and fixed lights produced with customized detailing to create a seamless ribbon of glass across the facade. The warm oil-finished Teak exteriors are the perfect complement to the limestone and architectural concrete materiality of the structure while the rift sawn white oak interior adds to the decidedly contemporary feel of the residence.

Glencoe, IL | It is tremendously gratifying to have an architect that has worked with you in the past insist on using our windows when it comes to building her own house. Such is the case with this modern residence in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Duratherm went beyond just providing windows and doors; an exterior wood panel system was developed and installed as accent pieces in strategic locations.

Raymond, ME | "Cabins" is hardly an apt description for this compound consisting of a group of four cottages arrayed on the shore of a pond in central Maine. A singularly unique project, the exquisitely detailed buildings prominently feature Duratherm's Lift/Roll doors with frameless corners and flush stone sills. Tenants can roll the doors open, enabling one entire corner of the living room to become an extended porch and provide unimpeded access to the front deck and pond beyond.

Charlottesville, VA | A gateway for visitors to the famed home of Thomas Jefferson, the Center comprises five pavilions using Duratherm window and door systems. Our products, produced with FSC™ certified wood coupled with natural building materials, two "green" roofs, and other sustainable elements, all helped this building earn a LEED Gold certification.

Newtown, PA | The client, a private school, wanted its library to be a tranquil place for students to look out upon nature and reflect. The architects responded by designing a soaring window wall. We provided windows, trims, and the wood components for the exterior sun shade, using FSC™ certified lumber to contribute to the project's LEED Gold certification.

Michigan | This design effectively uses the landscape to mediate between the primary residence and the guest quarters. An imposing succession of lift/roll doors gives open access to the wrap-around deck, the pool, and all aspects of the surrounding landscape, including the scenic focal point of the lake beyond.

Carlisle, PA | The defining element of this expansion of the Law School is the central courtyard. Duratherm provided a combination of fixed windows (some curved-in-plan), swing doors, and one mammoth Lift/Roll door to encircle the exterior meeting area with a sinuous, elliptical window wall. Exterior entries to the building also featured large expanses of window wall with varied muntin spacings.

Tiburon, CA | Located on a bluff with sweeping views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, this residence demanded a high-quality window and door system to take maximum advantage of the beautiful views and complement the complicated architectural geometries. We combined fixed and operable windows, swing and lift/roll doors coupled with direct glazed glass pieces to achieve the stunning results seen here.

Cape Neddick, ME | As can be seen in the photos, this residence is practically IN the Atlantic Ocean. With the severe exposure that seems to go hand in hand with spectacular views, using Duratherm windows and doors was a choice made early in the project development. The architect chose teak exteriors with a bleaching stain to accelerate natural weathering and provide for a low-maintenace exterior.

Park City, UT | Located near the top of one of Sun Valley's ski runs, this ski-in / ski-out residence seemingly grows out of the hillside. The use of green roof technology, natural stone, weathered timber siding, and Duratherm's bleached Spanish cedar windows and doors gives the impression of a structure that is a natural outgrowth of the rugged terrain.

Wilmington, DE | Duratherm fixed windows and doors lend warmth and distinction to this gateway to the mansion and gardens. The long colonnade, which serves as a dramatic preamble to the mansion tour, is an understated yet exquisitely detailed structure. It does not upstage the host, yet is a magnificent piece of architecture in its own right.

Sibley, MO | This center welcomes visitors to historic Fort Osage, built in 1808. Duratherm window and door systems add visual warmth to the building, constructed of poured-in-place concrete. For this project, our window-wall capability included a slip joint head detail to accommodate vertical deflection while still allowing the transfer of steel reinforcing loads at the head.

Austin, TX | The intricate geometry of this design generated complex exterior and interior spaces for our window-wall systems. This complicated installation featured a range of frame depths (giving windows a "furniture" aspect), façade treatments, and mullion configurations. Modified rain screen detailing in many places resulted in a custom exterior "picture frame" trim detail.

Pikesville, MD | Majestic fixed frame and lift/roll doors open the public areas of this residence to the landscaping, gardens, and wooded ravine on the edge of the property. Inside, the warm, clear finished mahogany complements the tranquil modern aesthetic.

Livermore, CA | This long, low primary residence uses Duratherm windows and doors along one entire elevation. The separate guest house, seemingly a folly planted in the back yard, overlooks vineyards that surround the property.

Williamstown, MA | The Student Center's exterior window treatments reflect the building's complex internal program requirements. FSC™ certified Spanish cedar is used throughout for combinations of window walls, punched openings, swing doors, Lift/Roll doors and spandrel panels. Curved-in-plan single hung and casement units grace the facade of the elliptical dining room. Duratherm provided nine glazing types to meet performance requirements.

Massachusetts | The woodsy setting of this home belies its urban location. Taking full advantage of the unique surroundings, the design combines fixed units, butt-glazed corners and lift/roll doors to create carefully framed "out in the country" views through finely detailed openings.

Croton-on-Hudson, NY | Evocative of a jewel box set in a lush green landscape, this combined addition and renovation features richly detailed window-walls among its natural elements, blurring the boundaries between inside and out.

Highland Park, IL | Duratherm provided mahogany fixed windows and swing doors for the new dining pavilion at the revered Ravinia Festival, summer home of the Chicago Symphony. Chicago Tribune architectural critic Blair Kamin states: "Its emphatic horizontal lines and richly layered mahogany façade subtly evoke Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Style. Their best stroke, though, was their deft handling of the weather-treated mahogany, which is used as a cladding material and as a frame for doors and windows. The mahogany creates pleasing visual rhythms, textures, and shade and shadow patterns that distinguish the pavilion from the monotony of a slick, low-slung suburban office building."

Jackson, WY | This home is framed by the majestic Grand Teton Mountains in Jackson, Wyoming. To capture the spectacular views in all directions, the windows were a critical element in the architectural design. The clean detailing and solid craftsmanship of Duratherm windows complement the architectural language of the house by keeping simple profiles that enhance rather than compete with the beauty outside.

Amagansett, NY | The architects characterize this house as North Shore Modern and it certainly lives up to the billing. It is sleek, modern, and very refined in detailing and massing. Carefully placed windows on the public, street facade provide controlled views while the lake side figuratively opens up with abundant glass walls and literally opens up with a series of huge pivot doors at the kitchen.

Mercersburg, PA | An 18' tall teak and mahogany window wall wraps the entire building, giving it a distinctive look and defining the exterior of the building's circulation envelope. Duratherm engineered and provided the steel lateral wind bracing at the vertical mullions of this curtain wall assembly. Combinations of clear and fritted glass give the building façade a continually changing appearance depending on time of day and light source.

Upstate New York | This small addition continues the dialog begun on the main residence while refining the detailing. Large mahogany fixed and outswing casements with custom stainless steel railing inserts provide a clean, zen-like tranquility to this yoga studio.

Upstate NY | This, the first US residential commission by Amsterdam-based UNStudio, is more sculpture than structure. What starts out as a rectangular box on one elevation morphs into two separate, diagonally opposed volumes on the opposite elevations, creating a flowing, split-level internal organization. Highly reflective glass adds to the sculptural quality, mirroring the surrounding landscape. Duratherm provided floor-to-ceiling fixed, casement, and lift/slide windows with painted finishes inside and out.

Belvedere Island, CA | Siting a residence on the steep slopes and narrow roads of Belvedere Island in San Francisco Bay is always a unique challenge. Sutton Suzuki Architects are well suited to this task as exhibited here. Duratherm mahogany windows with naturally finished interiors and painted exteriors enhance an elegant design, help delineate the public versus private spaces and celebrate the spectacular views. We provided a variety of fixed and operable window and swing doors. Two sets of Sliding/Folding doors open the downstairs spaces to the expansive terrace and pool area.

Austerlitz, NY | Floor-to-ceiling multiple panel lift/roll doors and fixed windows capture the views of this mountaintop residence overlooking the Hudson River valley. Form and function unite throughout the home with Duratherm fixed and operable windows, swing doors, and lift/roll doors.

Eagle County, CO | The architects' vision for this home was a series of cabins, transparently joined. To enhance this design, Duratherm designed butt-glazed corners with custom copper joint covers. We also designed window walls, which included engineering and providing window wall support. And we designed a unique 10-foot-wide, triple-hung, electrically operated unit that divides the pool between interior and exterior.

Provincetown, MA | This addition to the Hargood House helped to expand the museum's ability to store and display its growing art collection. Duratherm's high-performance teak and mahogany windows and doors are a key element of the building's sustainable design. Our products included a large lift/slide door that opens the main gallery into the courtyard and inward-swinging casement windows concealed behind the slatted exterior skin.

Glenside, PA | A two-story reading room is a highlight of this renovation/addition project. The architects' concept was to make the room appear as a lantern at night. Duratherm achieved this effect with operable monumental wood windows, detailed to accommodate adjustable sunscreens and interior pocketing shutters, and high fixed clerestory windows.

Ridgefield, CT | The capacity to stage outdoor events was an important requirement of this design. To make this possible, Duratherm constructed monumental bi-parting rolling doors at each end of the lobby. And we custom-designed a large swing door at one end of the gallery to enable easier transfer of large contemporary art pieces. We also provided interior wood panels and column covers.

Shelter Island, NY | Taking advantage of the sweeping ocean views, this project features a spectacular expanse of window-wall. Redwood adds glowing warmth to the interior design.

Long Island, NY | This design featured unusually thick exterior trim, creating a greater setback to the face of the glass. Lead-coated copper reveal strips separate individual window units; dark anodized covers on the butt-glazed corners give a seamless look and add structural support. States Williams, "We were concerned that the superior quality construction we wanted might make the windows clunky. Instead, Duratherm's wisdom and expertise gave us highly detailed, articulated, elegant windows."

Shebyogan, WI | This construction more than doubles the size of the original SOM-designed building, for which Duratherm also provided the windows. The new addition features over 32,000 square feet of punched windows and window-wall, including 80-foot-tall window-walls in the "Galleria" connecting this addition to the original building.

Middlebury, VT | Solid wood frames coupled with triple-pane insulated glass in the dining hall helped to achieve the energy efficiency necessary to meet the environmental goals of this LEED-certified building. Full height window walls – spanning from 8'-0" to 14'0" – encircle the elliptical structure. Their articulated layout showcases the façade to achieve the architect's vision of glazed pavilion.

Marin County, CA | Similar to an earlier project for this architect, this residence – called the Sky Arc House – features Duratherm operable windows and doors inserted into a stainless steel curtain wall assembly. Duratherm also provided custom triple-glazed acoustic windows for the separate recording studio.

Belvedere Island, CA | A large two-story window wall facing San Francisco Bay offers spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown San Francisco. Duratherm provided all the windows; swing, lift/slide and sectional garage doors; and multi-panel lift/roll doors leading to the pool terrace and the living/dining room deck.

Midwestern U.S. | This is one of very few residences designed by the late Aldo Rossi. For this project, Duratherm provided authentic divided light windows and doors. Many units featured custom 18" deep frames. All received a painted exterior finish.

Long Beach Island, NJ | This beach house features large lift/roll doors and wide expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass in loft-like interior spaces. The monumental windows and doors offer views of the shore looking out over the tops of the trees.

Boston, MA | Architects wanted the warmth and richness of wood windows. City officials, who had experienced safety and maintenance problems with aluminum windows in schools, agreed. "Knowing budget was a concern," states architect Matthew Oudens, "Duratherm worked with us to develop the most cost-effective solution possible without sacrificing their standards or our design intent." The project won an AIA National Honor Award.

New England | The juxtaposition of clear-finish mahogany window units and black EPDM exterior wall surface offers an intense yet appealing contrast. Duratherm provided fixed and operable punched windows and window walls, including butt-glazed corners and shadow box spandrel panels. The varied spacing and unit sizes in the window wall make for a deceptively complicated support system engineered and provided by Duratherm.

California | This residence features paired patio doors 7' wide by 10' high, electrically operated clerestory windows, and a gently curved window wall in the living room that affords sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

Coastal Maine | The client's mandate was for minimal use of structure and maximum use of glass. To achieve this, Duratherm provided multiple lift/roll doors utilizing pocket configurations and a mullion-less corner detail to allow unobstructed views of the Atlantic. One door pockets into the masonry chimney, anchoring one end of the living room. Large fixed and operable windows in the private areas of the house add to the overall transparency.

Martha's Vineyard, MA | Combinations of fixed and casement windows, featuring maple interiors, provide an elegant backdrop to the rooms in this relaxing oceanfront cottage. Gray stained teak exteriors perfectly complement the cedar siding and the idyllic setting. The result: a modern residence that blends with the local vernacular architecture.

Malibu, CA | For this project, the owner wanted nothing less than pristine teak. Though Duratherm had already culled imperfections out of the flitches, project architect Lilla Smith needed to come up to the factory to edit out oil marks and dark streaks even further. Recalls Smith, "Duratherm was very patient in allowing me to cull out irregularities we knew our client wouldn't accept."

New Haven, CT | Monumental 10-foot-high sliding doors with sliding screens open up to an exterior deck and give spectators in the viewing room an unobstructed view of the finish line. Turner Brooks praises Duratherm's support and collaboration: "It's great to have a window company that does complete shop drawings. And it's a treat to work directly with them to customize a solution. One feels well tended to by Duratherm."

Virginia Beach, VA | When architect Allison Ewing designed a large pivot door at the entry, Duratherm was concerned about water infiltration. Says Ewing, "Instead of resisting us, they came up with some cutting-edge solutions." This home, cited as a model of green building, appears as Cedar House in Home & Garden Television's list of Top 10 Most Beautiful Homes. Working with us on this house spurred Ewing to use Duratherm in her own home.

Raleigh-Durham, NC | For this project Duratherm provided curved-in-plan units for the corporate board room and a series of paired doors, some with narrow profile screen doors, surrounding a landscaped courtyard.

Cambridge, MA | Duratherm replaced deteriorated aluminum windows on this iconic Alvar Aalto-designed building with single-hung and fixed units. Owners chose Duratherm teak over aluminum for historical accuracy, lower maintenance, and to ensure its windows would last this landmark building’s lifetime. Susan Personette, then restoration project manager for MIT, says the final result “literally took our breath away. The building visually came to life again with the new windows."

St. Augustine, FL | Architects set stringent criteria for wind load and water penetration, specifying cypress, native to Florida, for the windows. During bidding, the architects nearly abandoned wood windows to stay competitive. "Duratherm used its expertise to suggest detailing that gave the appearance we wanted less expensively, allowing us to keep wood in the project," says architect Brad Nederhoff. Duratherm also provided steel window-wall support.

Martha's Vineyard, MA | Duratherm helped the architects reduce project costs while maintaining the same expanse of glass with one creative change: We replaced the paired casement windows as originally detailed with single awning units.

Winter Park, FL | For this restaurant, one of the busiest in the national chain, clerestory units angled 10 degrees off vertical needed custom detailing to deflect water to the exterior. Precisely located weepholes ensure that any water that does enter will weep out and not penetrate the wood.

Pleasantville, NY | For a large window-wall system, Duratherm constructed units in multiple sizes and multiple framed depths to achieve a mosaic-like pattern in both elevation and section.

Houston, TX | When this project came in over budget, Duratherm advised a material change that reduced costs without changing scope or detailing. Remarked the general contractor, "I wish saving money was always that easy."

Westport, CT | This upscale retail and office space, originally built on spec, now houses the offices of the project architects.

Massachusetts | For this seaside residence, known as the Sea Arc House, Duratherm operable windows and lift/roll doors were inserted into a stainless steel framed direct-glazed curtain wall assembly. The mahogany exterior frames were finished with clear Sikkens to complement the glass and steel of the window wall.

New Smyrna Beach, FL | For this AIA award-winning project, Duratherm created muntin-free windows and sliding doors to meet strict performance requirements. A butt-glazed window-wall sloping in two planes demanded creative detailing. "Duratherm tech support helps a lot with structural reinforcement. They're easier to communicate with than other window companies," notes Charles Rose, adding, "The windows look incredible. Visitors still comment on them."

Northern Wisconsin | The wood for the windows of this lakefront vacation home was selected to complement both an all-copper-clad exterior and the preponderance of Douglas fir in the interior ceilings, floors, and walls. The house won an AIA Honor Award in 1998.

Minneapolis, MN | A Duratherm curtain-wall system achieves the pavilion/belvedere effect. Hidden frame detailing on the windows minimizes vertical mullions. Large multi-panel lift/slide doors, set at 90 degrees to each other, stack in their respective pockets for a column-free open corner. After one custom window manufacturer proved unequal to the task, recalls a project architect, "we turned to Duratherm and they made our design work."

Minneapolis, MN | A large double-height window-wall from Duratherm graces the entry to the museum, on the University of Minnesota's East Bank campus. Called by some an "exploding artichoke" and by others a "tour de force," the museum earned Gehry the Progressive Architecture Design Award in 1991.

Western U.S. | This unique construction features lodge pole pine tree trunks as structural columns. Duratherm fixed, awning and hopper windows, in window-wall and remotely operated clerestory configurations, create natural airflow and ventilation. Large fixed lights, coupled with smaller ventilation panels, capitalize on the spectacular views and prevailing breezes.

Boston, MA | The painted wood storefronts are intended to reflect the turn-of-the-century feel of downtown Boston. Duratherm designed two-story storefronts for all buildings in the complex. Systems included windows, paneling and structural support.

Buffalo, NY | This National Historic Landmark, designed by Louis Sullivan, is regarded as a milestone in modern skyscraper architecture. Cannon Design restored it to its original elegance, maintaining historical accuracy. Duratherm replaced existing double-hung windows and a top floor series of round fixed windows. The project earned numerous awards, including the National Historic Preservation Award.

Cambridge, MA | Duratherm supplied solid mahogany windows for this AIA Honor Award recipient. Located in a residential area near Harvard University, it was widely praised for its sensitive scale and detailing, with the warmth of the mahogany windows contributing to its serene presence.

Exeter, NH | Duratherm founder Philip Cole provided all the millwork for this project, including windows, study carrels and paneling. It was his work with Louis Kahn on this project that inspired Cole to found a company specializing in monumental teak windows for institutional and commercial use.
